There's a quick and easy way to update your AirPods.

AirPods, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max can be upgraded, but it's not clear how.

Apple frequently releases software updates for its complete AirPods lineup, including the AirPods Pro, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, and AirPods Max. The company, however, does not explain how to upgrade your AirPods or what each firmware update does. So, no matter whatever AirPod model you have, here's how to do it.

But, first and foremost, why bother? Apple does not, of course, upgrade firmware for no reason. Firmware updates can fix bugs, such as ABC. If AirPods Max owners have experienced odd battery drain (for all other difficulties, there is the hidden reset button we discussed before), and enhanced performance, it's worth updating often even if everything appears to be working perfectly.

How to check the firmware version of your AirPods?

To make sure the upgrade hasn't already happened, check the firmware version of your AirPods. Connecting your AirPods to your iPhone is the first step. It doesn't matter how you do it for this phase, but it will when it comes to actually installing the update (more on that later).

Go to Settings > General > About on your iPhone, then scroll down. If your AirPods are linked, their name should appear. Check "Firmware version" after tapping the name. 4E71 is the most recent firmware version for all AirPods as of this writing, However, check Google to see if Apple has released a newer update.

How to Update Your AirPod's Firmware?

To upgrade your AirPods, you'll need to connect them to your iPhone again, but this time in a special way: the key is to keep your AirPods connected to your iPhone while still in the case. If your AirPods aren't in their case, they won't update, so don't expect iOS to automatically update the firmware. If you've already paired your AirPods with your iPhone, they should connect when you lift the case lid (again, AirPods Max should connect while placed in the case).

Now you must connect your AirPods to a power source. The update could theoretically work if you use wireless charging (assuming your AirPods case supports it), but I've only ever seen firmware updates using a lightning cord in walkthroughs. Allow your AirPods to charge for 10–15 minutes after connecting to electricity. Check the firmware version for your AirPods once this time has passed: it should now be fully updated. If not, repeat this step.
